Dutch Ambassador Visits Green House Project and Hadia Organic Farm: Advancing Sustainable Agriculture in Iraq

We had the honor of welcoming the Ambassador of the Kingdom of the Netherlands to Iraq, H.E. Janet Alberda, to the Green House Project and Hadia Organic Farm, part of Al Handal International Group. Accompanied by the Prime Minister's Advisor, Dr. Ali Al-Lami, the delegation explored advancements in sustainable and organic agriculture.

Hadia Organic Farm, located along the banks of the Tigris River near Baghdad, is one of Iraq’s first organic farms. It plays a key role in preserving rare crops and establishing the country’s first Seed Bank. By integrating organic farming techniques and environmental sustainability, it is transforming agriculture and enhancing Food Security in Iraq.

During the visit, the delegation was introduced to innovative organic farming methods and technologies that enhance productivity while preserving natural resources. The farm’s role in combating desertification was also highlighted, aligning with the Iraqi Prime Minister’s initiative to plant five million trees and palm trees to promote environmental sustainability.

Ambassador Alberda commended the farm’s contributions to Iraq’s agricultural sector and reaffirmed the Netherlands’ support for sharing expertise and technologies. Discussions explored the potential for expanding sustainable agricultural projects and the need for a supportive legislative framework for organic farming in Iraq.

Hadia Organic Farm’s farm-to-table model is already making an impact, supplying fresh, organic produce to Cafe 650 in Baghdad. The visit concluded with an inspiring view of the Tigris River, reflecting the harmony between nature and sustainable farming.

Both parties expressed optimism about the future of sustainable agriculture in Iraq and emphasized the importance of international collaboration in driving agricultural innovation.
