On February 25, Mr. Wadee Al-Handal, Chairman of Al Handal International Group and President of the Iraqi Private Banks League, attended the fifth meeting of the Diwani Order 24030 Committee on Combating Desertification. The meeting, held at the second branch of the Green House Project, was led by the Advisor to the Prime Minister, Dr. Ali Al-Lami, and included key stakeholders such as technical deputies from the Ministries of Agriculture and Water Resources, the Baghdad Municipality, the Director General of Municipalities in Baghdad, and representatives from the Popular Mobilization Forces' Service Effort Team.
The discussions focused on enhancing afforestation efforts in Baghdad in preparation for the "Baghdad: Arab Capital of Tourism" program. Participants explored ways to utilize national and private sector resources to establish urban forests, supporting government policies on environmental sustainability and public services.
Key topics included the challenges and sustainability of afforestation projects. As part of the action plan, a second training workshop was scheduled for stakeholders involved in environmental conservation.
Technical proposals were presented to optimize afforestation resources and support Iraq’s international environmental commitments. The meeting reinforced national efforts to combat desertification and achieve sustainable development.
Following the meeting, committee members visited the Green House Project to assess progress in expanding green spaces across Iraq. The visit highlighted achievements and future expansion plans aimed at increasing vegetation cover and improving the urban environment.
During discussions, Mr. Wadee Al-Handal talked about the importance of the project in combating desertification and improving the climate in Iraq by planting 500,000 trees across the country. This initiative aligns with Iraq’s broader environmental strategy and highlights the significance of collaboration between government institutions and supporting entities.
The committee reaffirmed its commitment to continuous monitoring and collaboration to ensure the success of afforestation projects, promoting environmental sustainability and national development efforts.
