Wadee Al Handal, Chairman of Al Handal International Group and President of the Iraqi Private Banks League, attended a meeting chaired by Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani on February 2nd to discuss the launch of the Cultural City Project in the historic Akarkouf area, west of Baghdad.
This strategic initiative, now in its advanced stages, aims to develop a cultural hub near the iconic Akarkouf Ziggurat, one of Iraq’s most significant historical and archaeological landmarks. The meeting gathered key officials, including the Governor of Baghdad, the Prime Minister’s Advisor for Tourism Affairs, and the Mayor of Abu Ghraib District, to outline the project’s implementation.
Prime Minister Al-Sudani emphasized the crucial role of tourism in economic growth, job creation, and strengthening Iraq’s cultural identity. He highlighted the importance of private sector involvement in restoring archaeological sites, improving tourism infrastructure, and maximizing the country’s revenue potential.
Wadee Al Handal reaffirmed the commitment of the Iraqi private banking sector to supporting such initiatives. Al Handal International Group values the role of cultural and historical projects in contributing to local development and creating new opportunities in the tourism sector.
